The signs you need marketing leadership
- Marketing decisions wait on the owner, and the owner is busy.
- Agencies and freelancers each do their part, and nobody owns the whole.
- Spend goes up every year and nobody can say what it returned.
- The team has people who can execute, but nobody who sets the plan.
Each of these is a leadership gap, not a staffing gap. Adding another doer does not fix it.
How a fractional CMO works in practice
A fractional chief marketing officer joins your company for a set number of days each month. They sit in the leadership meeting and hold authority over the marketing budget and the people who spend it. They write the plan, hire and manage the vendors, review the numbers and report to you as an executive would.
The difference from a consultant is accountability. A consultant hands over recommendations. A fractional CMO owns the result and is in the room when it is reviewed.
When a full-time hire makes more sense
If the senior work fills a week, hire for the week. A company launching in several markets at once, running a large in-house team, or shipping products every month has enough leadership work for a full-time executive.
Many companies use a fractional leader to reach that point. The plan, the team and the reporting are built; the full-time hire inherits a working department instead of starting one.
What to expect in the first months
The first weeks are reading: the numbers, the customers, the team and the vendors. Then a written plan with the few things that matter most, in order. Then execution against it, with a monthly review where the numbers are read together.
By the end of a quarter you should be able to say what marketing is for in your company, what it costs and what it brings in. If you cannot, the engagement is not working.
The same model for operations and revenue
The fractional model works the same way for a chief operating officer or a chief revenue officer. The question is the same: do you need the decisions made by a senior person, or do you need the senior person all week. The answer decides the hire.
