Agency, in-house or fractional?
There are three ways to get marketing done, and each fits a different moment in a business.
- An agency brings a team of specialists that you share with other clients.
- An in-house hire gives you one person, all day, who knows your business inside out.
- Fractional leadership gives you a senior marketing leader, a fractional CMO, for part of the week, to set direction and run whoever does the work.
Most growing companies use more than one of these over time. The question is which fits now.
When an agency fits
An agency fits when you need several skills at once: search, Google and Meta ads, email, a site that turns visits into enquiries. Hiring each of those in-house is slow and expensive, and one generalist rarely does all of them well.
It also fits when you want results you can measure soon. An agency that has done the work before starts from a plan rather than from scratch.
Is it worth it to hire a marketing agency? It is when the agency can show you in numbers what it produced: leads, sales and what each cost. If it reports only activity, it is not.
When an in-house hire fits
An in-house marketer fits when the work is steady and full-time, and when much of it depends on knowing the business day to day: product launches, sales support, events, and content that needs your team's input every week.
Should you hire a marketer or an agency? If you can keep one person busy every day on work that suits a single skill set, hire. If the work spans several specialties, or comes in waves, an agency or a mix is usually the better use of the money.
When fractional leadership fits
What is a fractional marketing leader? An experienced chief marketing officer who works with your company part-time. They set the strategy, the budget and the measures, and they manage the agency, the in-house team or both.
It fits when you have people doing marketing but nobody deciding what marketing should do, or when you are about to spend real money and want a senior person accountable for it. More on when to hire a fractional CMO.
What to measure either way
Whichever you choose, judge it the same way:
- Leads and sales, tied to the channel that produced them.
- What each lead or sale cost.
- Whether you can see the numbers without asking.
- Whether accounts, data and creative stay in your name.
