How assistants pick which businesses to name
When someone asks an assistant for a roofer in New Bern, the assistant searches the web, reads the pages it finds, and writes an answer from them. It favors pages it can read without running scripts, facts that agree across sources, and sentences it can quote without editing.
The same work that helps search rankings helps here. One extra demand applies: the text must be in the page when it loads, not drawn in afterwards by code.
Make your facts agree everywhere
Assistants cross-check. If your website says one phone number, your Google Business Profile says another, and a directory lists an old address, the assistant trusts none of them. Write your name, address, phone, hours, services and service area once, then make every listing match it word for word.
- Google Business Profile
- Your website footer, contact page and structured data
- Facebook, LinkedIn and any directory that lists you
Write pages that answer the question first
An assistant looking for a short answer takes the first clear sentence it finds. Open each service page with one or two sentences that say what you do, where, and for whom. Put the detail after.
Headings help too. A heading that reads as the question a buyer asks, followed by a direct answer, is the format assistants quote most.
Make sure the assistant can read your site
Many sites built as web apps send an empty page and fill it in with code. A person sees the content; most AI crawlers do not. Ask whoever built your site whether the full text is in the first response from the server. If it is not, that is the first fix.
Check your robots file as well. Blocking the crawlers that assistants use to search removes you from their answers.
Track what the assistants say
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, in the words they would use, and write down who gets named and which pages get cited. Do it again every week. The answers move, and the only way to know your work is landing is to watch them.
We run this check for clients from the Command Center, with the questions, the answers and the citations side by side.
