Is SEO dead now with AI? A straight answer

No. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews build their answers from pages search engines can crawl and trust, so the work that ranks you on Google is the same work that gets you named. What changed is what you measure.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. The AI assistants that answer questions about businesses lean on the open web: pages search engines have crawled, business profiles, reviews and other sites that mention you. If search engines cannot read your site or do not trust it, the assistants have little to say about you.

What is true is that fewer searches end with a click. When an AI answer names a few businesses, those businesses get the call and the rest never get the visit. So the job is no longer only ranking in a list. It is being the business the answer names.

What changed when assistants started answering

A search used to return a page of links and let the person choose. An assistant reads those links for them and writes a short answer. That changes three things for a business.

  • The answer is short, so only a few businesses are named.
  • The assistant favours sites that say plainly what they do, for whom and where.
  • Mentions on other sites, such as directories, reviews and local press, count as evidence that you are real.

None of those replace search. They raise the bar for the same work.

What still works

The fundamentals that win on Google still carry most of the weight:

  • A site that loads fast and that crawlers can read without running scripts.
  • A page for each service and each area you serve, written in plain words.
  • A complete Google Business Profile with steady, genuine reviews.
  • Titles, headings and structured data that state what each page is about.

If those are missing, no amount of AI-specific work will help. If they are in place, you are most of the way there.

What you need to add

Write answers, not slogans. Put the questions your buyers ask on your pages, and answer each one in the first two sentences. Assistants lift short, self-contained answers and skip clever taglines.

Be consistent everywhere. Use the same business name, address, phone and description on your site, your profile and every listing, so the assistants can tell they are all about you.

Be listed where assistants look. Directories and review sites that show up in AI answers for your category are worth a complete, accurate profile. A listing nobody reads is not.

How we measure visibility in Google and in AI answers

Rankings alone no longer tell the whole story, so we track both. In the Command Center, clients see where they rank on Google and in the map results, and what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok say when asked the questions their buyers ask: whether the business is named, whether its site is cited, and who is named instead.

The same questions are asked again every week, so you can see whether the answer changed after the work shipped. That is the only honest way to say whether AI search work is paying off.
